Introduced in 1956, the Guild Artist Award is the company's flagship acoustic archtop guitar. Originally created in collaboration with legendary jazz guitarist Johnny Smith, it was renamed the "Artist Award" in 1961 when Smith left to endorse Gibson.
It remains Guild’s most elaborate and expensive production instrument.
Origins and Early Years
Designed in collaboration with jazz guitarist Johnny Smith, the flagship archtop was initially released as the "Guild Johnny Smith Award". It was built to exacting acoustic standards utilizing high-grade woods, including a solid carved spruce top and flamed maple back and sides. When Smith ended his endorsement and joined Gibson in 1961, Guild renamed the guitar the "Artist Award". The truss rod cover was updated to reflect the new name, but the guitar maintained its premium appointments.
The Artist Award is celebrated for its premium, highly ornate craftsmanship. The guitar's design features include:
- Inlays: Distinctive split-block triangle and abalone/mother-of-pearl fingerboard and headstock inlays.
- Body Construction: Carved European spruce top and solid tiger stripe maple on the back and sides.
- Hardware: Outfitted with an ebony fretboard, a floating pickup (such as a DeArmond or custom humbucker), gold engraved harp tailpiece, and gold Grover Imperial tuners.
